What is Kaltura?

Kaltura is a proprietary media tool that faculty, staff, and students at St. Kate's can use to record, store, edit, and distribute media. Kaltura typically houses videos for lectures, presentations, and assignments that can be embedded into Canvas for convenient viewing in a course or for other audiences. Kaltura integrates with the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) and is typically accessed through two primary tools within a Canvas course:

Kaltura My Media (Personal Repository)
  • What it is: A private media library tied to a user's Canvas account, visible only to that user.
  • Function in Canvas: It serves as the central hub for all videos, audio, and images that a user (faculty or student) uploads, records, or creates using Kaltura's capture tools. This content is available across all of their courses.
Embed Media Tool (Rich Content Editor)
  • What it is: A tool available anywhere the Rich Content Editor (RCE) appears in Canvas (Pages, Discussions, Announcements, Assignments, Quizzes).
  • Function in Canvas: This feature enables both instructors and students to embed media directly from their My Media library into course content (Pages, Discussions, Announcements, Assignments, Quizzes).

Benefits of Using Kaltura

The Canvas integration enables specific workflows that enhance teaching and learning:

Video Assignments and Grading

Instructors can create Canvas Assignments where students use the embed tool to submit video presentations or demonstrations. The videos play directly within the Canvas SpeedGrader, allowing instructors to view, annotate, and grade the submission without downloading any files.

Interactive Learning

Instructors can create in-video quizzes within Kaltura and publish them as assignments in Canvas. The quiz results automatically feed back into the Canvas Gradebook, transforming passive video watching into an active, graded learning experience.

Accessibility and Compliance

Kaltura automatically generates captions (with options for professional services) for all uploaded media, ensuring content meets accessibility standards and is fully searchable by viewers within the Canvas environment.
