Earn an Online Teaching & Design Badge
Academic Technology is happy to introduce badging opportunities for faculty and staff!
What’s in it for me?
Badges are a way to demonstrate competency in a specific subject area. Internally, they can be used to track professional development engagement. Externally, they can be shared on social media sites (such as LinkedIn).
Badges currently available
Below are opportunities currently available to faculty and staff to complete. Look for more options as Academic Technology and other departments utilize the Parchment Digital Badges tool more frequently.

Online Teaching & Design
This badge is a culmination badge earned upon completing four other badges: Principles of Online Course Design, Online Teaching Essentials, Canvas Proficiency, and Quality Assurance. The recipient of this badge demonstrates foundational knowledge and capability in building and teaching courses that meet essential quality standards.
How are the badges tracked?
We are leveraging a tool embedded within Canvas called Parchment Badges (formerly Credentials). The badges currently available are linked to mini-courses in Canvas, but the system also has the ability to track synchronous engagement. As a result, you may see sessions with QR codes for tracking future badging options.
Where do I find my badges?
If the course uses digital badges, they can be accessed in Canvas by clicking on “Parchment Badges” in the course navigation menu. The Canvas Training Course is one of our courses set up with badges, and it is one that all faculty are enrolled in, so you can see what this looks like from that perspective.
What if I think I should have earned a badge but haven’t received it yet?
We did our best to review engagement in badge-earning activities prior to the implementation of the Canvas Parchment Badges system, but auditing and then inputting this information into the Parchment Badges system was a manual process, so we may have missed you. Please submit an Academic Tech Request for our review if you believe you should have earned a badge you’re not seeing.
